Dr. Robert S. Siegler, an EPIC associate director, has been awarded the 2022 G. Stanley Hall Award for Distinguished Contribution to Developmental Psychology from Division 7 of the American Psychological Association. This award not only recognizes the scientific merit of an influential individual’s work in the field of developmental psychology, but also acknowledges the practical importance of his work in terms of connecting developmental psychology with other disciplines and societal issues.
Dr. Siegler is the Jacob H. Schiff Foundations Professor of Psychology and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. His research focuses on how children learn mathematics and how a theoretical understanding of mathematical development can help improve student’s math learning. His work, confirmed by subsequent research, supports that playing certain numerical board games predicts broad and enduring gains in preschoolers’ and elementary school children’s numerical understanding, especially for children from low-income backgrounds.
