EPIC

Education for Persistence and Innovation Center

Located at the Grace Dodge Hall of the Teachers College, Columbia University

What Does EPIC Study?

EPIC is a global interdisciplinary research center at Teachers College, Columbia University dedicated to studying the critical role that failure plays as a catalyst for learning, innovation, leadership and career development.  EPIC is founded on the premise that success is often the fruit of persistence in the face of failure and adversity, which in turn motivates individuals to become creative problem solvers on the road to success. EPIC is dedicated to deepening our understanding of failure and identifying strategies for persisting and triumphing over adversity.

We will study: 1)  How greats become great?   2)  what inspires people to persist or give up when facing failure,  3)  how students can channel frustration and negative emotions constructively when facing failure, and  4)  what types of classroom interventions can prepare students to learn from their failures?

The Premier Research Center for Education

Founded in 2018, the Education for Persistence and Innovation Center is led by Professor Xiaodong Lin-Siegler of Teachers College, Columbia University. The center carries on the work of its predecessor, the Motivation and Instruction Lab, and has been focused on numerous groundbreaking projects since its inception. The centerpiece of the Motivation and Instruction Lab, the celebrated published study Even Einstein Struggled, is the foundation for the research generated by EPIC.

Among its many functions, EPIC serves as an incubator for future educational research worldwide.

EPIC is located at Teachers College, Columbia University.
